ASSE 6020 – Medical Gas Systems Inspector

The ASSE 6020 credential is intended for persons who need to oversee the work of others, primarily on the job site but also possibly in a design firm or engineering office. Course is designed to provide a broad understanding of medical gases and medical gas systems with the expectation that the participant will be prepared to visit job sites and identify common problems with installations. An introduction to the rules of NFPA 99, NFPA 55 and the ASSE 6000 Series is provided, along with an understanding of the role of the gases, environment of the medical gas system and safety when working around these systems.

  • Building Blocks III - How a medical air system is constructed around the First Rule  
  • The Second Rule of Medical Gas   
  • Building Block IV - Complying with the Second Rule by good installation practices 
  • Build Blocks V - Enforcing Compliance with testing 
  • Peak Performance - Testing and Second Rule. Post-maintenance 
  • What’s Documented is Done - Testing and Record keeping
  • Typical attendees might include government officials, supervising engineers, site managers, design engineers who perform site reviews, and facilities managers.
  • Online training: Work at your own pace around your current work schedule. This course takes a minimum of 24 hours to complete. 
    • What to expect: There will be individual video modules (each approximately 45-75min long), that can be paused, and played over. However, we encourage you to complete each module uninterrupted. There are also online quizzes and a final exam.  
  • In-Person training: We offer in person training of the same ciriculum. Typically we schedule for large private groups close to your facility. Please contact us at [email protected] for more information.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of documented practical experience either; employed by a government unit as a plumbing and/or mechanical inspector, or as an administrator of such inspectors, or be a person regularly involved in the design, inspection or verification of medical gas systems, or be a 6010 installer.

(For both In-person and Online Classes)

  • The student will need access to a computer with a stable internet connection with the ability to stream videos and take exams online uninterrupted. 
  • The student is required to have a current copy of the NFPA 99-2021 edition which is not included. It is not included and can be purchased from the NFPA website 
  • The student will need to perform a physical brazing sample while connected to a video call (MS Teams) with a certified proctor. These brazing samples will need to be mailed into a lab for inspection.

(The exam is online, computer and internet access are required.)

  • A minimum of 100 randomized, multiple-choice questions  
  • Minimum passing grade of 70%  
  • Time limit of 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the exam  
  • Maximum of 3 attempts to pass. If you do not pass after 3 attempts, you will be required to take and pay for the full course again 
  • Open Book exam
  • All credentials are provided digitally through our verified credential partner, Accredible. You will receive a PDF certificate, a digital ID card for your mobile phone wallet and a digital badge 
  • Credential valid for 3 years upon successful completion.
  • You can renew your credential to the latest code through the ASSE 6000 refresher course. This course should be taken one month before the expiration of your credential to ensure continuity.
