A reliable, energy-efficient Medical Air System upgrade for an Australian General Hospital

A large general hospital in Australia recently undertook a critical infrastructure upgrade to modernize its ageing medical air compressors. Compliance with AS2896:2021 for medical gas systems and AS2568 for medical air purity had become increasingly important, making the upgrade not only essential for operational efficiency but vital for patient safety.
Operating in a hospital environment where medical air is used continuously across operating theatres, intensive care units and other critical departments means that reliability and air purity can never be compromised.
Challenge
Operating continuously with high-demand areas such as operating theatres and intensive care units places significant pressure on medical air systems. Any downtime or compromised air quality can have serious clinical consequences.
The hospital’s existing compressors were showing clear signs of ageing. Maintenance requirements were increasing, energy consumption was higher than modern alternatives, and the system no longer aligned with current regulatory standards.
At the same time, the available plant room space was limited, meaning that any new system would need to integrate seamlessly into the existing infrastructure without requiring major structural changes.
The hospital therefore required a solution that could:

Solution
We responded to the hospital’s tender with a tailored solution designed around the facility’s specific operational and spatial requirements. A key consideration identified by the consulting engineers was the limited space within the plant room. The proposed system therefore needed to integrate efficiently with the existing infrastructure while minimizing installation complexity.
At the core of the upgrade is the Atlas Copco’s ZT compressor, a proprietary and unique technology of 100% air-cooled, two-stage rotary tooth compressor designed for critical medical applications. To meet stringent medical air purity requirements, we also supplied the BeaconMedaes PMA medical air purifier system, configured on a single skid that can deliver performance and redundancy in a compact footprint. This integrated skid-mounted design includes a fully assembled electrical cabinet, providing several operational benefits:
